Bill's Week at the Tallahassee Homestead, February, 2014Life consists of routine tasks, which together summarize in part a person's life. Thus, I asked Nedra to take a few posed images of me that represented a week in mid-February, 2014. ---------------------------------------- |

The dogs and I enjoy interacting with each other. Buttley, nearly 15, keeps plugging away, and that warms my heart. She's a little slow now, the world is a quieter place her these days, and she is not nagged by hunger. Sleeping is her main activity, and I always look over at her to make sure she is breathing. I worry constantly about her. She is and has been a terrific companion. How lucky have I been! Prissy--looking up lovingly at me at upper right--is a big old heifer dog; her weight goes up and down but is now at a svelte 105 lbs. Despite her loving attitude, she soon gets her cup full, and wants to be on her own. It always seems odd to me that she'd rather be on the back porch staring out at the property than inside on a warm rug. She does like to come in, just long enough to snoop a bit, then stands by the back door until it is opened for her. She's precious, too, just in a different way.

Over the years, I have grown several cultivars of jujubes and I hope to write about them sometime. My favorites are Leon Burke (syn. Li?), Sherwood (discovered by the late Sherwood Akins), So (which I wonder is a literal pronunciation of the Chinese word for jujube, Tsao) and Honey Jar (recently imported). The first three I have on their own roots; several tries to root Honey Jar--probaby my top pick--have been unsuccessful. I finally gave in and cut scions and grafted onto thorny rootstock; on other jujubes, my grafts have been successful, and I hope it is so on this one. |
As far as productive cordons go, these are ancient, being about 25 years old. After pruning and cleaning up the vineyard floor, I sprayed with lime-sulfur. Unless I get an aphid infestation, I will not spray the muscadines again. Unfortunately, the nearby bunch grapes require a regular fungicide program. |

For reasons that are lost to Nedra, I like old iron and stroll through my iron garden when I take a break.
