Comments:To the best of my reckoning, the Lucious G. Outlaw family lived at the L.G. Outlaw homeplace (later, where Aunt Lena lived) at the time of this photograph. In the 1910 census enumeration, the John C. May Family was 206; the Lucious Outlaw Family, 207; Joseph N. Outlaw Family, 209; Sam Watson Family, 204. Family tradition has it that W.H.H. Outlaw (my ggrandfather) was living with L.G. at the L.G. Outlaw Homeplace when he died in 1910, and that is borne out by the census. Grandpa L.G. died in 1918 and as far as I can tell, Granny Della was not enumerated in 1920 (but I have not searched thoroughly). Daddy would have been just 6 years and less than one month when his father died (Oct 21, 1918), so it is a reasonable supposition that this dressed-up pose was made for the funeral. This is only one of two photographs that I have of Daddy before his Berry College photograph. The other one was taken at Deep Ditch school (which was located right at the Joe Outlaw place) and since I have one of Uncle Buren taken there apparently the same day, that photo passed as a school picture. In short, there must have been some important occasion for Daddy to have been so dressed up. Nedra also thinks that Daddy looks shy and forlorn. The fence appears to be very similar to that in Outlaw-019, which I presume was taken at the Joseph N. Outlaw place--note the width, irregularity, and spacing of the palings. The photo of Daddy appears to have been taken outside the fence and that of Melvin inside the fence. The shadows indicate that they were taken at different times of day. I do not know, of course, but it is reasonable that Grandpa L.G. would have been laid out at the home of Uncle Joe (joining property and Uncle Joe administered the estate). Last edit Oct 31, 2011 |
