Comments:Saran and Rebecca were tenants at the farm from about 1943-1946. Saran had the distinction of building the final "old" structure there, the last tobacco barn (where now stands my tin shed). As time moved along, Saran got a job in town, at J. Henry Gaskins' abattoir, and I believe that it was Lester Warren who tended immediately afterward. (Just to write it down: Steven Lewis (my ggrandfather's (Buck) sister's (Polly) husband), Jerry S. "Buck" Sutton (my ggrandfather), L.G. Outlaw (my grandfather), ?, the Exums, Daddy & Uncle Buren, the Wetheringtons, the Parrs, Lester Warren, Sam Watson (Mama's brother), and then Herbert Watson (Mama's other brother, who rented it and did not live there).) Mama and Daddy always liked the Parrs, and I hope the sentiment was returned. Even after I was an adult, Mama and Daddy would visit, with the pretense (and genuine purpose) of buying meat from them. (They made sausage, souse, and other products and sold from their back door on the Alapaha Hiway.) In particular, Mama always spoke glowingly of Becky. Supplemental Image A is of Saran by himself. Supplemental Image B is of Alton and Nell Rowan. |
