Comments:The sugar-mill yard was the site of many family activities, such as making syrup, killing hogs, and here, cooking. This was the kind of day that my mother liked better than life itself--having all the family in one spot, gathered around food. While Sam cooked, all the children would collect around Daddy, who sat on the swing on the front porch. He would spin one tale after another, but THE story that always was a favorite with all the younger grandchildren concerned Santa-Bo-Get-Us. This was one mean rascal, and he darn near caught Daddy in the tobacco barn, or something like that. As mentioned, that was THE story (told about one Sunday a month), and he\'d lead up to it by smaller tales invoking other frightening creatures, like terribly mean bobcats. |
